Northside Hospital’s Cancer Institute recently received a three-year accreditation with commendation from the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons. The accreditation comes as a result of surveys performed earlier in 2013. Patti Owen, director of oncology services at Northside, said in a statement that she and the oncology staff were pleased to receive the accreditation.“This award exemplifies our ongoing commitment to providing high quality, multidisciplinary cancer care as a comprehensive, community hospital and cancer institute,” she said. Established in 1922 by the American College of Surgeons, the commission is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to improving patient outcomes and quality of life for cancer patients through prevention, research, education and monitoring of care. Patients at accredited commission facilities benefit from a multidisciplinary approach to treating cancer with a team that includes surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, as well as diagnostic radiologists, pathologists and other cancer specialists. Patients also have access to information on clinical trials and new treatments, genetic counseling and patient-centered services such as social support, patient navigation processes and documented care plans. Like all commission facilities, Northside maintains a cancer registry and contributes data to the National Cancer Data Base, the largest clinical disease registry in the world. In turn, it has access to the information in the registry. To earn voluntary accreditation, a cancer program must meet or exceed 34 quality care standards, be evaluated every three years, and maintain levels of excellence in the delivery of comprehensive patient-centered care. Northside Hospital has been providing care to the north Georgia area for more than 40 years. The hospital is the only one in Atlanta chosen by the National Cancer Institute to be a Community Cancer Center. More cases of breast, gynecological and prostate cancer are treated at Northside than anywhere else in Georgia, and the hospital has the best survival rates in the nation for bone marrow transplants.“This recognition … enables Northside to offer our patients clinical excellence that is on par with the academic-based programs and leading-edge technologies and treatments,” Owen said. “All along with the personalized, compassionate care typically associated with a community hospital.”
