Two free meals will be held for anyone in Forsyth County who needs a place to spend Thanksgiving. Cumming First United Methodist Church will present its annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday. The entire community is welcome to attend the feast, which will be held in the church’s Family Life Center, 770 Canton Hwy. North Forsyth residents can attend a community dinner at The Remnant, a Christian youth center at 6805 Keith Bridge Road. The Remnant meal will be provided from noon to 2 p.m. According to the social media page of The Remnant, those planning on attending the center’s meal are asked to bring a side item, but it’s not required. Linda Field, the volunteer coordinator for the First United Methodist event, said this will be the 13thyear the church has presented the Thanksgiving meal, for which church members and other volunteers do all the work.“The congregation brings in canned goods and we have food drives since we need so much for this meal,” she said. Many church members also prepare turkeys and pans of dressing at their homes and bring them in for the event.“We have someone who donates 150 pounds of potatoes every year so we mash potatoes on Wednesday,” Field added. Besides those who help prior to the event, Field said, about 150 volunteers will help with preparation Thursday, serving and cleaning. Nearly 25 volunteers will drive around the country making deliveries of about 320 meals to shut-ins and others who aren’t able to make it to the church. Field said about 900 people are expected to eat at the church.“This is such a wonderful thing because it’s open to everyone,” she said. “There are a lot of people in the county who don’t have family here and they can all come in and be with people during Thanksgiving.“It’s a really nice thing to do and all the volunteers enjoy doing it, too.”
