CUMMING — Members of this year’s Leadership Forsyth class are seeking community support of their large-scale service project. Each year, a new class of about 30 is selected for the nine-month leadership development program. Through the program, they learn about various facets of Forsyth County life and receive master’s level leadership training from the University of North Georgia. At the end of each program year, class member are tasked with completing a large-scale project that in some way will leave a lasting legacy in the community.“This year our class has chosen to design and build a memorial for fallen veterans of the Army National Guard,” said Karen Carroll, a member. The memorial, which they hope to have constructed by late spring, will be at the Cumming Regional Readiness Center off Pilgrim Mill Road, near Ga. 400 at Exit 16. The class needs to raise $15,000 for the project.“The memorial will include a garden where family, friends and those who appreciate our freedoms can visit and honor the sacrifice of all who fought but did not return,” Carroll said. To help in their fundraising efforts, the class will hold a Texas Hold ’Em Poker Tournament beginning at 7 p.m. April 12 at Stars and Strikes Family Entertainment Center in Cumming.“We’ll have an incredible evening of fun competition, big prizes, a 50/50 raffle and more,” Carroll said. A donation of $50 is requested to participate, but additional contributions toward the project will be accepted during the first two hours of the event. Prizes of $1,000 for first place, $300 for second and $200 for third will be awarded. If people can’t make it to the tournament, Carroll said there are other ways they can help.“They can donate materials to help us in the physical construction of the memorial,” she said. “We are very open to in-kind donations.
