FORSYTH COUNTY — A large billboard that has stood on county-owned property at Mullinax Road and Hwy. 9 for about 20 years must come down, the Forsyth County commission has decided. Commissioners reached that conclusion Tuesday after hearing from County Attorney Ken Jarrard, who had researched the matter. Jarrard said the billboard arrangement dates back to 1993, when the then commissioners allowed Buddy Lang of Lang Signs to place it on the site.“They’ve been paying us $150 a month to keep this billboard there,” Jarrard said. “There is no formal lease agreement.” The sign belonged to Lang, who passed away nearly three years ago. Jimmy Myers, executor of Lang’s estate, said Thursday that the sign is a small item in the estate. Having not yet been notified by the county, however, he is in a holding pattern.“I do not see that as a problem,” he said. “I’ll have to wait until I hear from [the county] to see.” Jarrard said he likely would be in touch with Myers sometime next week, as the commission is set to give final approval on the matter April 17. During the commission’s work session Tuesday, Jarrard presented options, including renegotiating the price to compete with fair market rates, or to take it out for bid, as well as removing it. It is the only sign located on county property in Forsyth.“[Commissioners] asked me to give them a notice to remove the sign,” Jarrard said.
