SOUTH FORSYTH -- Sharon Elementary is home to probably the two most pampered chickens in Georgia. Lula and Cornelius joined the south Forsyth campus earlier this year as a result of Sharon being chosen to participate in the Georgia Grown “Feed My School” program. Only five schools in the state were selected for the year-long program, which helps schools better educate their students about fresh, Georgia Grown food products. Through the program, Sharon has featured various learning events each month all school year, showcasing different locally grown products. As part of the program, chickens Lula and Cornelius came to reside on the campus, said parent volunteer Christine Murphy.“These chickens are so cute,” Murphy said. “One of our parent volunteers comes around and does ‘chicken chats’ with all of the classes and the students get to hold the eggs and pet the chickens.“My daughter and one of my girlfriend’s daughters got to actually wash, shampoo, condition and blow dry these chickens. I’ve never seen anything like it.” The public will have a chance to meet Lula and Cornelius as the Sharon Elementary Feed My School programs culminate with a farmers market from 3:30 to 6 p.m. April 25. Prior to the farmers market, students will be fed lunches with 90 percent of the meats and produce being locally grown all week from April 21 to 25.“As a result of that, we said, ‘What a great way to showcase some local businesses who are providing our students with these healthy food options,’” Murphy said. “So we have about 30 vendors signed up so far for the farmers market.” Murphy said they will be selling everything from locally made sauces, jams, jellies and honey to produce and meats. Some artisans will also be offering handmade items such as jewelry.“We’ll also have some arts and crafts for the kids, Nigerian goats on display, and mini cooking and exercise classes,” Murphy said. “It’ll be a fun, family event.” Murphy said everyone from parents and students to school staff have embraced the Feed My School program offerings throughout the year.“We’re making the most of this program because it’s one thing to be awarded it, but it’s something else to bring it to the next level, heighten awareness and make the kids excited,” she said.
