CUMMING — Parsons in Lakeland Plaza wasn’t terribly busy earlier this week, but that will soon change. Cris Willis, owner of the gift and collectibles store, said by the end of the week the store will be hopping.“It starts off a little slow at the beginning of the week [before Mother’s Day], but by Saturday we will have the long line of men and their children,” she joked. “Not that I want all the women to realize that their husbands are procrastinators, but it’s usually the men that are waiting until the last minute.” Good thing for them that with everything from jewelry and chocolate to home décor and handbags, Parsons is basically a one-stop shop for mom’s special day.“You can get some jewelry and some chocolate and then we have cards at the register, so you’re ready to go,” Willis said. According to the National Retail Federation, shoppers across the nation plan to spend an average of nearly $163 on mom this year. That’s down from an all-time high last year of about $169. Total Mother’s Day spending is expected to reach $19.9 billion. No doubt, many of those dollars will go to sending mom flowers. Ronnie McCormick, owner of Lanierland Florist on Canton Highway, said next to Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day is probably the busiest holiday of the year for his shop. The main differences in the holidays for florists, McCormick said, is that all Valentine’s Day deliveries have to be made on that specific day while Mother’s Day bouquets can be dropped off all throughout the week.“There’s also a lot more variety with Mother’s Day,” McCormick said. “For Valentine’s Day, it’s pretty much all red roses, but with Mother’s Day people do all sorts of things. It’s all different types of flowers and all different prices.” At Parsons, Willis said people shop for Mother’s Day on all different budgets as well. For those with a little more money to spend, the store offers the Pandora and Brighton jewelry collections.“Pandora is always strong, so that will probably be our busiest area,” she said. “And Brighton has a special promotion they always run for Mother’s Day that makes that area a little crazy, too. If you buy a Brighton necklace and bracelet, you get any pair of earrings for free.“That’s a great deal and the men love to go over there so they can get an entire collection and they’re all set.” Willis said the store also offers plenty of lower-priced items for little shoppers, as well.“The kids come in to pick out stuff for mommy and we try to help them because little kids will just pick up anything and think it’s great,” she said. “We try hard to guide them in a good direction.” Willis said the store sees many return customers year after year.“They make Parsons their Mother’s Day tradition and we love that,” she said.
