FORSYTH COUNTY — Families are invited to begin their Mother’s Day weekend with United Way of Forsyth County’s annual Flavors of Forsyth. Now in its fifth year, the food sampling festival is set for 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Lanier Technical College Forsyth Conference Center. Featuring dozens of food samples, ranging from appetizers to desserts, the event raises funds for United Way of Forsyth’s partner agencies and programs. Leigh Crow, the organization’s director of resource development, said the United Way provided nearly $1.2 million in total funds to some 60 programs and initiatives in the community during 2013.“As in the past, we are looking forward to having thousands attend Flavors of Forsyth this year to help with this worthy cause,” she said. The fare will feature everything from “Cuban and Peruvian to sweet treats, organic fare and barbecue,” Crow said. “We have a wide variety of restaurants participating this year … there is something for every palette to enjoy.” Tickets will be sold for 50 cents each, and food samples will range in price from one to six tickets. Besides food, Flavors of Forsyth will also offer an adult beverage tasting room with a large selection of beer and wine.“We’ll also have experts on hand to answer questions about the beverages,” Crow said. The tasting room will require identification and only those 21 and older will be allowed to sample the beverages. There will be plenty of activities for young guests to enjoy, too. Flavors of Forsyth will again offer a large kids’ zone with activities such as face painting, inflatables, hamster balls and Mother’s Day arts and crafts projects. Some kids’ zone activities will also require tickets. For the second year, there also will be a Chalk Walk Competition, where chalk artists will show off their impressive skills. Live music will be provided by The GLOW Band, and artists will sale their wares in an artists’ market area. Restaurants taking part in the festival will vie to be the best in several categories, including appetizer, fast and casual dining entrées, dessert and booth. Guests can also vote for their favorite restaurant to receive the People’s Choice award, and young visitors can vote for the Kid’s Choice honor. Admission and parking are free, and a shuttle service will be available from the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta field lot on Ronald Reagan Boulevard, between The Collection at Forsyth and the conference center.“[Flavors of Forsyth] is a great way to support our community and support United Way of Forsyth County,” Crow said. “There is something fun for everyone at the event and it will be an awesome treat for moms.”
