The Forsyth County Parks and Recreation Board is looking at building a recreation center in Haw Creek Park. Parks and recreation director Jerry Kinsey said the proposed center would be smaller than the current recreation buildings located in Fowler, Old Atlanta and Central parks, although the Haw Creek building would also have meeting rooms and rooms for fitness and dance classes. Haw Creek Park, 2205 Echols Road in Cumming, is 85 acres and includes a pavilion, a playground and about 3.3 miles of trails for walking and mountain biking. The recreation center there would be located on the right side of the entrance. Steve Dabbs is the parks and recreation board representative for Haw Creek’s area. He said while Old Atlanta Park’s recreation center is in that district, it is not in a convenient location for many people in the area because it is close to the border of another district. Dabbs said he has spoken with several residents of the area and the response has been mostly positive. Kinsey said the board is still in the early planning stages for the center and it is still undecided how it would be funded. Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax or impact fee funds may be used, Kinsey said. The Forsyth County Board of Commissioners would make the final decision about funding. If the parks and recreation board voted in favor of the project, the commissioners would also need to approve it before it was actually built.
