SOUTHWEST FORSYTH — Different options will be explored for reworking a busy southwestern Forsyth intersection. During a work session Tuesday, Forsyth County commissioners voted 4-0, with Brian Tam absent, to have county staff investigate a couple of possibilities for the area around Mullinax and Union Hill roads near Shepherd’s Pond subdivision. Assistant County Manager Tim Merritt said the project had included changes to where Mullinax and Union Hill meet Rives Drive, an entrance to the subdivision. Among those were removing a traffic signal at Rives Drive.“When we met with the [homeowners association], they were very concerned about this,” Merritt said. “They felt very strongly that it did need to be protected at Union Hill so they could get easy access to make a left out.” But after going back to the engineering firm working on the project, Merritt said representatives felt the signal wasn’t warranted based on traffic counts and conditions. He suggested looking into shifting the signal to a second entrance into the subdivision farther east on Union Hill.“We feel like it might be a better solution to come down here, signalize this intersection, giving them a protected right or left out,” Merritt said. John Cunard, director of the county’s engineering department, also suggested the possibility of installing a roundabout at the Rives Road crossing.“That would provide the safest alternative and keep traffic moving,” he said, also noting that construction and maintenance costs would be lower. Ultimately, commissioners voted to have county staff reach out to consultants for studies on both options return with the findings at a future meeting.“You can have a consultant evaluate all the alternatives and come up with a recommendation and then they could present it to you,” Cunard told commissioners. “And then based on the technical information from the presenter, you can then get input from the Shepherd’s Pond HOA on which [option] they prefer.”
