SOUTH FORSYTH — In a move that transportation officials said should “vastly improve” traffic flow, travelers on Bethelview Road likely will notice some traffic shifts starting Sunday. According to the Georgia Department of Transportation, crews will be working to finish work and open new lanes at the intersection with Hwy. 9. Bayne Smith, a DOT district engineer, said in a statement that the completion date for the project is July 29, provided the weather cooperates. Crews were slated to begin shifting traffic on Hwy. 9 overnight Saturday.“[They’ve been] paving nightly this [past] week, working toward shifting traffic on [Hwy. 9] overnight this Saturday,” Smith said. The lane shift had originally been planned for overnight Sunday.“One day sooner than expected, Sunday morning, State Route 9 will be in its final location and open up both lanes in each direction,” Smith said. “It will also open up all the turning lanes from 9 onto [Highway 141] toward [Ga.] 400.” The $5 million construction project, which was awarded to Marietta-based C.W. Matthews Contractor in 2012, is reworking the busy crossing near Ga. 400 at Exit 13 to create two through lanes, two left turning lanes and a right turning lane for each leg. The effort will also upgrade the traffic signal equipment and will add sidewalks. A second project will also widen Bethelview to Castleberry Road.“After paving finishes up and … traffic is shifted, the paving crew will move to Bethelview,” Smith said. “Right now, crews are installing the base layer to support the coming asphalt on Bethelview, and finishing up earthwork to set the new grade of Castleberry.” According to Smith, work on a new concrete median along Bethelview will begin this week. He noted that most of the sidewalks are finished except at crosswalks where ramps for wheelchairs will be put in place. The $4.8 million Bethelview-widening project, which is also being handled by C.W. Matthews, is expected to be complete by Sept. 6.
