CUMMING — The Cumming Aquatic Center is drawing praise for playing host to the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association Swim Meet. During the city council meeting Tuesday night, leaders heard from Greg Little, parks and recreation department director. Little said the two-day swim meet in July drew some 1,200 swimmers from across the state and about 8,000 spectators. It also netted about $17,000 for the center. And perhaps more significantly, Little said the department has received several letters from swim teams around the state praising the event’s organization. Also during their meeting Tuesday night, city officials approved the following: * Fairburn-based Strack Inc.’s bid of about $95,000 to decommission a pump station on Market Place Boulevard. Jon Heard, director of the city’s department of utilities, said the move is a cost-saving measure for the city as wastewater from that area can flow to another nearby pump station. The Market Place station will be removed and placed in storage for later use on future projects. * A motion to accept School Street from Forsyth County after improvements have been made to widen it to two lanes, and to allow Mayor H. Ford Gravitt to execute any needed construction easements as crews work on the street project and the nearby parking deck for the new county courthouse. * A request from the parks and recreation department to advertise for a grading contract and construction of a new multi-purpose building, which will be inside the renovated City Park. * An ordinance from the county health department in which all violations of county health code that occur within city limits will be handled in municipal court. * A bid of about $12,000 from Macs Worldwide for basketball jerseys for the parks and recreation department. * Loretta Bigas’ request to rezone a 1.5-acre site on Rainey Drive to institutional from residential for the purpose of establishing a home care facility. * A measure to do away with all the city’s current contracts for Dumpsters and solicit bids for service that would provide them at all municipal locations.
