Fourth quarter woes crept up again for Pinecrest Academy’s girls. The Lady Paladins held a narrow lead over Fellowship Christian most of the way before watching it dissolve into a 44-37 loss on Tuesday at Pinecrest. Pinecrest (1-4) was limited to four points in the fourth quarter, as Fellowship (3-4) forced turnovers and rallied behind transition layups. "This is our fourth game like that," Lady Paladins first-year head coach Theresa Guard said. "We get ahead and give it away in the fourth quarter. We had a couple of injuries at the very end of the game where our point guard [Amanda Boyd] was out with her asthma, and our [main] scorer, Chantelle [Kiernan], her knee has been bothering her." Kiernan, Pinecrest’s only senior, led the team with 13 points. She poured in a career-high 31 during the Lady Paladins’ 63-20 victory over Yeshiva earlier in the season. Kiernan hit her second three-pointer against Fellowship in the third quarter, and teammate Ave Fouriezos banked in a jump shot soon after to push the Lady Paladins’ lead to 29-23 at the 4:19 mark in the period. The score had not been separated by more than four points before Fouriezos’ shot, and neither team established more than a six-point lead the rest of the way. Fellowship trimmed the gap to one point entering the fourth quarter, then outscored Pinecrest 9-3 to pull ahead 41-35 with 1:10 remaining. Pinecrest was held to just two points in the final period until Kiernan hit a jumper with 55 seconds remaining, cutting the gap to 41-37. Pinecrest fouled to put Fellowship on the free- throw line on two different occassions in the closing seconds. Fellowship missed both 1-and-1 opportunities, but Pinecrest was unable to take advantage. Pinecrest fouled a third time, putting Kelsey Royalty on the line with 20.2 seconds remaining, and the sophomore point guard knocked down both shots to seal Fellowship’s victory. Royalty led all scorers with 14 points and keyed the majority of the fast breaks that Fellowship had in the game. "We’re really trying to get the girls to love basketball again, which is tough when you don’t win a game the whole [2011-12] season," Guard said. "We have a lot of young players and only one senior. We’re trying to build the program. We’re getting there." Fellowship Christian (boys) 57, Pinecrest Academy 33 Pinecrest Academy’s boys couldn’t establish any offensive rhythm, suffering their worst loss of the season against Fellowship Christian (4-1) on Tuesday at Pinecrest. Pinecrest (3-3) fell into a 22-6 hole before Austin Ward (team-high 14 points) scored seven of the nine points the team produced in the final 2 minutes, 41 seconds of the second quarter, narrowing the score to to 26-15 at halftime. That was as close as Pinecrest would get. Roger Rickman poured in 24 points and Travis Kinney scored nine of his 14 in the third quarter to push Fellowship’s lead north of 20 points for the majority of the second half. "It wasn’t clicking," Pinecrest head coach Jay Lynch said. "There was no chemistry, we didn’t hit the open shots we got, and games like that ... it kind of spirals."
