LAKE LANIER – The man Forsyth County emergency personnel and hospital staff tried to save last night from drowning has died, authorities said. Quentin Aaron Muse, 20 of Braselton, succumbed to the effects of being underwater for 40 minutes after being transported to Northside Hospital-Forsyth on June 8 from the Shady Grove Campground beach. Witnesses on scene said Muse was in a group of four swimmers when he began to yell for help. A 21-year-old friend attempted to assist him to shore but was unsuccessful, according to Epifanio Rodriguez, a spokesman with the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office. When the Forsyth County Fire Department Dive Team located him within 15 minutes of beginning their water search with the Forsyth Sheriff’s marine unit, he had been underwater for about 40 minutes and was not breathing. The fire engine companies, all with divers, conducted a coordinated search for Muse after being dispatched at about 8:25 p.m., according to Forsyth Fire Division Chief Jason Shivers. With the incident being witnessed, the divers had a narrow search area, Shivers said, which led to a rapid recovery and enabled the efforts to be conducted as an active rescue. He was later pronounced dead after attempts at administering CPR on scene and other life-saving measures at the hospital. The friend who tried to save Muse was treated for water inhalation on scene but was not transported to the hospital. An investigation found Muse has not wearing a life jacket and did not indicate any sign of foul play. An exact cause of what affected him remained unclear, Shivers said, but he either became exhausted or was simply unable to make it back. It was assumed he knew how to swim because he made it out to the water in the first place. They were in an approved swim area, Shivers said. According to Robin Regan, also a spokesman with the sheriff’s office, the group had reached a buoy, not more than 100 feet from the beach.
