CUMMING -- A Cumming man accused of stealing more than $110,000 over a 15-month period from a local business has been indicted by a Forsyth County grand jury. William Jon Howard, who was 45 when he was originally arrested, faces six counts of theft by taking, according to a June 13 indictment report. He is accused in four counts of taking more than $25,000 for each count, and more than $5,000 for two other counts from James P. Waite Inc., a subcontractor for Reid & Reid. According to the indictment report, the thefts occurred between April 1, 2014 and Aug. 30, 2015. According to a Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office report following his initial arrest, Howard supposedly electronically transferred money to his wife and wrote checks to himself from the business’s account without the owner’s permission or knowledge. Records provided to the sheriff’s office at the time by the company’s owner show thefts occurred in the form of 73 checks and additional electronic transfers, For the past several years, the company’s accounts had been administered by J. Howard and Associates in Cumming, whose owner, Joy Howard, has been “seriously ill for a while now and that her son, Jon, has been keeping the accounts.” Howard’s mother was not thought to be involved in the scheme, said Deputy Epifanio Rodriguez, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office, at the time. His arraignment has been scheduled for July 12 before Forsyth County Superior Court Judge Philip C. Smith.
