North Forsyth’s Savannah Chapman will play softball for (Div. II) Georgia College and State University next season. The first baseman and outfielder paced North to its most wins (19) since the 2006 season and a Region 6-AAAAAA championship. Chapman, who will primarily play in the outfield, will now try to help the Lady Bobcats win the Peach Belt Conference. Chapman is still dealing with a nagging shoulder injury. She injured her right shoulder in 2011, but still hasn’t fully recovered. Even with the injury, her batting average was an impressive .466 with 27 RBIs. "I want to come in and show [the coaches] that I’m not the best I can be yet," Chapman said. "My shoulder isn’t fully where it needs to be and I want to regain my strength and speed." The senior toured the campus in the summer and immediately liked what she saw. "It’s a perfect distance from home, not too far but far enough," Chapman said. "It’s wonderful and the campus is beautiful, but seemed homey to me, somewhere I belonged." Chapman hasn’t decided on a major, but is excited about what the liberal arts college has to offer. Brittany Smith signed a National Letter of Intent to play softball at Valdosta State University next season. The North Forsyth shortstop will transition to either second base or left field for Valdosta, a move she welcomes. "I actually really like playing in the outfield," Smith said. "I play different spots on travel teams, so it won’t be hard. "[Valdosta’s] softball team is amazing. The coach is a cool guy." Smith impressed the Valdosta coaching staff enough that she was told during her visit that she likely will start as a freshman. While flattered, Smith said playing time wasn’t that big of a deal. "[Playing time] wasn’t really a focus point," Smith said, who plans to major in nursing. "I wanted to go to the right school that had what I wanted. It’ll probably be a little hard doing both, but I can handle it." Smith won’t be alone at Valdosta. West Forsyth’s Maci Fletcher will also play on the team and the two plan to be roommates.
