A week after the permanent closure of the parking deck in the Cumming square, more temporary public parking locations have become available. The 246-space deck at East Main and Mason streets, which opened in 1994, will be demolished in mid-January to make way for a new Forsyth County Courthouse. The deck closed Dec. 28, and county government is reminding jurors reporting Monday, the first summons date of the year, to use the temporary parking locations. According to spokeswoman Jodi Gardner, the public and county employees have several options while the deck is closed, including another 75 parking spots announced Friday. Cumming Baptist Church has allowed those spaces to be used as overflow for weekday, daytime parking for the public and county employees. “Forsyth County certainly appreciates Cumming Baptist Church being such a good neighbor and for working with the county as parking needs are addressed in light of the projects slated for downtown,” Gardner wrote in an e-mail. The primary parking locations for the public include the lot at the corner of Maple Street and Castleberry Road and spots at the county administration building, some of which are limited to two hours. County employees can park in designated spots at the administration building, Cumming City Hall, the Cumming Playhouse and Cumming City Park. A map on the county’s Web site shows the locations of all temporary parking. The courthouse and jail projects were approved as part of a November 2011 referendum to extend the special purpose local option sales tax, known as SPLOST VII. The projects, including two new parking decks, are estimated to cost about $100 million, or nearly half of the anticipated revenue from the six-year tax collection. The demolition of the existing parking deck will be the first noticeable change in the city as the projects begin. Gardner said site preparation work and any needed relocation of utilities is under way. The bid for the demolition is on the agenda for the county commission’s work session Tuesday.
