More than 45 cats have been spayed or neutered for free in February as part of the Humane Society of Forsyth County-sponsored Prevent-a-Litter Month. Less than a week remains in the campaign, which offers the service for free to qualifying pet owners or those who humanely trap and release feral cats. The month-long offering aims to help prevent litters and reduce cat overpopulation. The humane society is providing funding through SNAP, its low-income assistance program for Forsyth County residents. Pet owners will need to provide proof of financial need and a current rabies vaccination when filling out an application at the shelter. Individuals or groups who are involved in the trap and release of feral cats should also contact the shelter to schedule a free spay or neuter. Veterinarian Tracy Land, of Pet Vet in Cumming, has worked with the humane society to provide the free operations. The funding was made possible through a donation to SNAP from the late Maureen Mahoney, a former board member. For more information, please call (770) 887-6480 or e-mail rescuetheforsythpets@gmail.com. Visit the shelter at 4440 Keith Bridge Road to complete an application.
