GAINESVILLE - Two men took less than two minutes to steal a donation container shaped like a doghouse from the Humane Society of Northeast Georgia early Monday, according to surveillance footage. A brick thrown through a window allowed the men to gain entry to the West Ridge Road facility. The Gainesville Police Department responded to an alarm triggered at the Humane Society about 1:50 a.m. At the scene, they discovered that one of the front facing double pane windows had been broken by a brick. The doghouse, custom painted by local artist Fox Gradin, is not regularly emptied unless clearly full, but based on donations in past years, Humane Society employees expect that the doghouse likely contained hundreds of dollars in donations.      Upon further inspection, the security camera footage clearly showed two men pull up in a white sedan, break into the building and drive away with the doghouse protruding from the trunk of the vehicle. The two men took only two minutes to break in and leave the scene, taking only the doghouse. No animals were taken, and police are working with the footage and evidence left behind at the scene to find the men responsible.

DAHLONEGA — A man knocked off a ladder after a 2014 car chase has filed a lawsuit against the state Department of Public Safety, seeking at least $1 million and claiming the Georgia State Patrol negligently performed a precision immobilization technique, or PIT, maneuver. Terry Dean Grizzle, of Dahlonega, filed the suit in Lumpkin County State Court on March 21.“The Department of Public Safety does not comment on pending litigation,” the Georgia State Patrol public information office wrote in an email. A PIT maneuver is a tactic to cause a fleeing car to turn sideways. On July 30, 2014, a state trooper pulled over a suspected stolen Ford Ranger near Ga. 52 and Happy Hollow Road in Dahlonega. While the deputy examined the driver’s documentation, the driver sped off, according to the lawsuit. The trooper later executed the maneuver, “causing the Ford Ranger to careen out of control,” the suit claims.“At the same time, plaintiff Terry Dean Grizzle was on a ladder working on a sign at Parts City Auto Parts,” according to the lawsuit. “The Ford Ranger careened into the pole and ladder upon which [Grizzle] was perched, knocking the ladder off the pole and dashing [Grizzle] to the ground, causing [Grizzle] serious and permanent injuries.” Grizzle was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, where he was treated for broken arms and facial bones. According to the lawsuit, the medical expenses have exceeded $195,000 for injuries including head trauma, rib fractures and a herniated disc. According to the suit, Lumpkin County law enforcement had set up tire-deflation devices close to the chase location. Executing the PIT maneuver “negligently failed to consider the risk of foreseeable harm to [Grizzle],” according to the complaint. The suit claims the defendants “should be held liable in an amount of at least $1,000,000” and seeks a jury trial.

CUMMING — Two Roswell teenagers have been arrested in connection with the robbery Tuesday night of a gas station east of Cumming near Lake Lanier, authorities said. Stephan Burnette, 17, and Troy Palmer, 18 were each charged with armed robbery. Burnette also faces one count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, according to Epifanio Rodriguez, a spokesman for the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office. The suspects had reportedly conducted armed robberies in two other jurisdictions outside of Forsyth that night. According to initial reports, they entered the Chevron gas station at 2595 Buford Dam Road about 9 p.m. No one was injured in the incident, but Burnette reportedly pointed a semi-automatic gun at the chest of an employee. After getting an undisclosed amount of money, the teens drove off in a black sports utility vehicle, Rodriguez said. They were later arrested about 2 a.m. Wednesday during a traffic stop on Buford Highway (Hwy. 20) at the entrance to Ga. 400. The stop was made when a deputy matched the vehicle's description to lookout information. Rodriguez said evidence of the crime — including the gun, a bandana worn by Burnette and about $1,000 — was found in the vehicle. Both suspects are being held at the Forsyth County Jail without bond. Rodriguez said drugs and alcohol were not thought to be factors in the incident.

GAINESVILLE — A Gainesville man is accused of switching his son’s drug Adderall, used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, with a substance “believed to be sugar,” according to authorities. Dennis Lane Johnson, 46, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of second-degree child cruelty by the Multi-Agency Narcotics Squad and the Hall County Sheriff’s Office. He was later released from the Hall County Jail. Johnson’s attorney, Graham McKinnon, said his client has spent a life in law enforcement and has worked for 25 years at Phillips State Prison in Buford.“These allegations are false and are brought by a vindictive ex-wife,” McKinnon said. Authorities said they believe Johnson allegedly replaced his son’s Adderall “in the capsules with another substance, believed to be sugar” between December 2014 and September 2015.“As a result of not taking his needed medicine, the child had behavioral and emotional problems in school,” MANS Lt. Scott Ware wrote in a news release.“Once this was discovered and the child began taking his prescribed medicine again, the behavioral/emotional problems ceased and he functioned appropriately in school.”

NORTH FORSYTH — Local law enforcement is investigating reports of gunfire Sunday night in north Forsyth. A man told Forsyth County Sheriff’s deputies he had been shot at twice by a stranger on Mount Tabor Road about 9:30 p.m. The resident had been walking his dog near his truck and had “put up his dog and told his wife that he is going to check out a noise and if she heard shooting, call 911,” said Forsyth County Sheriff’s Cpl. Robin Regan. The man reportedly returned fire but did not hit the suspect, who was described only as a white man wearing dark clothing and a bandana over his face, crouched near [the resident’s] truck.”“Other than the resident’s cartridge casings, no physical evidence was found,” Regan said. Speculation and rumors swirled on social media after the incident and into Monday morning. Regan said they have not been validated.“The rumor … turned it into three black males committing an armed robbery,” he said. “That did not happen.” However, the incident remains under investigation.“We are treating it seriously. We did thoroughly search the area,” Regan said. Tracking dogs with the sheriff’s office alerted to a trail that did not match the suspect’s described direction of travel. Crime scene technicians also processed the incident location for the investigation.

SOUTH FORSYTH — A Boy Scout troop from south Forsyth is without $10,000 worth of camping and service project supplies after its storage trailer was stolen in Gwinnett County. The trailer housed everything the troop of some 25 members uses to camp. That included stoves, cooking gear, tools, shovels, lanterns, tarps, patrol boxes and service project supplies, said Tom Gillon, scoutmaster for Troop 1109.“We had several key donations and fundraisers over the past year that allowed us to have a fully stocked and prepared trailer, ready to support the troop on our outings and community service projects for the foreseeable future,” Gillon said.“It has taken other Boy Scout troops years to achieve what we accomplished in less than a year. Sadly, we’re back to where we started a year ago as a brand-new troop.” The troop meets at Lakeside Middle School after forming last year. Gillon said they filed a report with Gwinnett County police Friday. The department confirmed the report filing for a stolen storage unit in Buford. According to an incident report, the trailer is “fully enclosed and black … there was one orange sticker on the rear door that said ‘KTM world.’” Gillon said the Scouts range in age from 11 to 17.“They’re bummed all their stuff got taken. It’s like, you stole from the Boy Scouts? Really? They are disappointed and surprised about it,” he said. “They know we’ve worked hard to build up what we had.“But they’re maintaining a positive attitude. Part of scouting is learning to deal with problems and overcoming those and adversity, and this is a very real-life lesson. It’s kind of a rough one we have to go through.” To help Troop 1109 in their efforts to reclaim lost items, visit troop1109.org.

CUMMING -- Two men from Cumming have been arrested in connection with a recent residential burglary. Jacob Eugene Huffman, 31, was charged with three counts of burglary and two counts of entering auto. Joshua Scott Jones, 27, was charged with burglary, theft by taking, possession of cocaine and possession of marijuana. Both are being held at the Forsyth County Jail, Huffman without bond and Jones on a $3,300 bond for the misdemeanor theft charge, according to Deputy Epifanio Rodriguez, a spokesman for the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office. The arrests came after evidence found at the scene linked them to the Pilgrim Point Road burglary, which occurred in the early hours of March 29. The home is off Pilgrim Mill Road near Lake Lanier. The homeowner reportedly walked in and saw the suspects inside before they fled with a laptop. The computer was later recovered and returned to the owner, Rodriguez said. They were located and charged later that day.“They are also believed to be involved in other burglaries and similar crimes through Forsyth County,” Rodriguez said. The sheriff's office is familiar with both men. Huffman was first arrested in 2009 and has had a string of non-violent charges since then, including probation violation, criminal trespass, burglary, theft by taking and theft by deception, Rodriguez said. Jones’s arrest history goes back to 2007 and includes similar charges, such as burglary, theft by taking and resisting arrest, as well as underage possession of alcohol and simple assault and battery.

CUMMING -- One person was hospitalized and two were arrested following a brief chase Thursday evening that started when a deputy initiated a traffic stop on Buford Highway at Ronald Reagan Boulevard.   According to Deputy Epifanio Rodriguez, a spokesman for the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office, as soon as the deputy activated his lights to stop the Mustang, the driver sped up and ran through a red light heading east on Buford Highway (Hwy. 20).   As the Mustang went through the light against the signal, it struck another car in front of it, knocking it into a motorcycle that had started through the intersection. Although the motorcycle flipped, knocking the rider off, he told officers he was not injured, and was up and walking around the scene.   The driver of the car that was hit was the person who was hospitalized. The extent of that person's injuries was not available, but officials did say they appeared not to be life threatening.   As soon as the Mustang wrecked, one of the occupants jumped from the car and fled behind the nearby Hampton Inn, where he was caught by deputies. Rodriguez said the man was in possession of what officers believe to be methamphetamine when he was caught. A second person in the car was also taken into custody during the investigation, which is continuing.

GAINESVILLE — Fifteen bicycles and other goods have been stolen from a Toys for Tots storage facility in Gainesville run by the local Marine Corps League. According to Gainesville police, “Juveniles are breaking in to the business in the overnight hours and taking items that are marked for Toys for Tots or other Disabled American Vets.” Marine Corps League Upper Chattahoochee Detachment Commandant Brent Barrett said there have been about 10 instances over a month-and-a-half span where kids have been “taking advantage of us.” The most recent incident occurred after 7 p.m. Saturday at the Atlanta Highway facility.“They play with everything in the warehouse, and it seems like we just can’t catch them,” Barrett said. The organization installed cameras about two weeks ago at the 55,000-square-foot facility, which has had its windows and doors broken.“We’ve been there two years and nothing’s happened, and all of a sudden we can’t keep them out of the building,” Barrett said. The facility houses beds, wheelchairs and other items for the Disabled American Veterans.“We also have a food pantry and the clothing for the homeless, and they went through and started eating food, too,” Barrett said. Boxes and other presents have been damaged inside the facility.“When Christmas comes around ... we’re not going to have the toys that we normally would have to give away,” Barrett said. Anyone with information is asked to call the Gainesville Police investigator at (770) 534-5254.

NORTH FORSYTH — A 46-year-old Dawsonville woman was arrested after a recent traffic stop in north Forsyth, during which authorities found about 1,000 suspected doses of methamphetamine. According to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened about 6 p.m. April 8. Lorrie Dianne Klein was pulled over on John Burruss Road at Shannon Drive for having a cracked windshield and for reportedly not staying in her lane, according to Deputy Epifanio Rodriguez, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office. Rodriguez said Klein has been charged with trafficking in methamphetamine and possession of methamphetamine and marijuana with intent to distribute. In addition, she faces charges of possession of marijuana less than one ounce, possession of drug-related objects, windshield requirements and failure to maintain lane. She is being held without bond at the Forsyth County Jail. After a drug dog alerted positive to the area, about 98 grams of meth and 10 grams of marijuana, along with “multiple drug-related objects and $519 in U.S. currency” was found inside the vehicle, according to Rodriguez. He said the meth was reportedly concealed in a can of peaches that she had retrofitted into a concealment container. Klein reportedly told deputies she intended to sell the items.

SOUTH FORSYTH — Three Atlanta residents have been arraigned on charges from a series of armed robberies at area Walmart stores, including one in south Forsyth during which a gun was fired, that took place between May and October. Kesia Quinette Jackson, 44, Deanthnoy L. Foster, 27, and Makisha Renee Sanders, 42, were indicted by a federal grand jury on Wednesday and arraigned before U.S. Magistrate Judge Janet F. King. Charges in the case, which is being handled by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, include conspiracy to commit armed robbery, armed robbery and use of a firearm during a crime of violence. John Horn, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia, said in a statement, that officials “hope the arrests and indictments in this case will restore the security felt by the employees and customers of these stores, as well as the surrounding neighborhoods.” According to information presented in court, the defendants targeted Walmart stores and a Citgo Food Mart in the metro Atlanta area, with Jackson and Sanders acting as scouts or lookouts. Prior to the robberies, they would reportedly enter the stores and pose as customers to determine when employees were removing cash from the self-checkout registers. They would then contact Foster, who would enter the stores wearing a surgical mask and using a firearm to rob the employees of cash. In the last robbery, he discharged the firearm into the floor near the employees. Numerous media outlets connected the last robbery as occurring on Oct. 7, when one of three suspects entered the Walmart at 2395 Peachtree Parkway in south Forsyth. According to Forsyth County News accounts, the male suspect was wearing a surgical mask and fired a semi-automatic handgun into the floor before leaving with money. There were no injuries reported. Other area stores where similar armed robberies occurred include: * May 15: 8424 Mall Parkway, Lithonia * Aug. 11: 970 Mansell Road, Roswell * Aug. 18: 4725 Ashford Dunwoody Road, Dunwoody * Sept. 13: 7050 Highway 85, Riverdale * Sept. 21: 8424 Mall Parkway, Lithonia * Sept. 26: 4975 Jimmy Carter Blvd., Norcross * Oct. 1: 6152 Covington Hwy., Lithonia In December, the FBI asked for the public’s help in identifying the suspects. Special Agent J. Britt Johnson said in a statement that “numerous jurisdictions were impacted by these multiple commercial armed robberies, creating certain challenges for investigators.”“Those challenges were, however, overcome as a direct result of the hard work and determination of the many officers and agents representing numerous metro Atlanta area law enforcement agencies working together with the FBI’s Atlanta Metro Major Offender Task Force,” Johnson said.

GAINESVILLE — A north Forsyth businessman faces a misdemeanor charge after Hall County Sheriff’s Office deputies spotted a surplus vehicle with Hall County markings at his home, according to authorities. Charles McElroy Turner III, 46, was charged with having markings of a law enforcement vehicle. Deputies responded April 10 to 2200 Martins Ford Road in northern Hall County, regarding a domestic dispute, according to Nicole Bailes, a spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office.“When deputies arrived to address the domestic call, they encountered on the driveway a small sign that read police checkpoint ahead,” Bailes wrote in an email. “There was also a [2000] Crown Victoria vehicle that had been stripped and Hall County lettering placed on the vehicle.” Investigators discovered the car had been purchased through GovDeals.com, where surplus vehicles are sold. Turner said his company, Corporate Auto Brokers on Browns Bridge Road in northern Forsyth County, purchased the vehicle at auction and that the car has been there for years.“I took a marked car that we had purchased at auction and put it in my driveway to try and keep people from coming down there,” Turner said. Bailes said all of the markings and equipment were removed when the vehicle sold at auction.“The investigation did not reveal that Turner was using this vehicle to conduct traffic stops or engage in an official capacity,” Bailes said. “However, the markings that were added to the vehicle were not authorized.” Turner said he did so for his own safety and cited previous safety concerns in his neighborhood, adding that he was unaware having the car there would be against the law.“It takes them over 20 minutes to get to my house when you dial 911,” Turner said. Turner turned himself in to the Hall County Jail on Friday and was released on a $1,300 bond.“The vehicle was seized until Turner could arrange to have the markings removed from the vehicle,” Bailes said. The incident was not Turner’s first brush with the law. In 2011, he was charged by the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office with impersonating a police officer and two counts of false imprisonment. The charges, which Forsyth County News accounts show were reduced to two counts of disorderly conduct as part of a plea deal in October 2012, stemmed from roadside confrontation involving two teenage girls. As part of his guilty plea, Turner was ordered to spend 24 months on probation and perform 250 hours of community service. He also had to write apology letters to the teens and pay a $1,000 fine. In addition, he was directed to have no involvement in any law enforcement activities. Turner had previously offered his helicopter, which he no longer owns, to assist local agencies, including a drug task force and the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office. The teens, ages 17 and 16 at the time, reported that Turner had flashed a Lumpkin County Sheriff's Office badge at them on Jan. 22, 2011, after they pulled out of a grocery store parking lot on Hwy. 306. Authorities said the teens apparently got too close to Turner's white van, which was marked on the side with his company logo. The symbol is a seven-pointed star with the state seal that looks similar to a police badge.

NORTHWEST FORSYTH — One of the four signs on Old Federal Road in north Forsyth marking the Trail of Tears path from the 1830s has gone missing. A report was filed Friday with the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, according to Epifanio Rodriguez, a spokesman for the agency. The woman who filed the report told the agency she helped get the signs installed and believes it has been stolen. According to a social media post about the incident, the signs signify the original trail Cherokee Indians were forced to travel when removed from their land in 1838 and marched to a holding fort in Chattanooga, Tenn. One of the Cherokee removal forts, Fort Campbell, formerly known as Scudder’s Crossroads, was built along Old Federal Road, according to the Georgia Chapter of the Trail of Tears Association.“The Historical Society of Forsyth County has been [for] at least 10 or more years documenting our history of the Forced Cherokee Removal. We have partnered with the Georgia Chapter of Trail of Tears, the National Association of the Trail of Tears, the Forsyth County government and the National Parks Services to get the removal route marked in this county,” the post said. “Those signs represent hours and hours of research and work.” The case will be assigned to a detective as an active investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at (770) 781-3087.

NORTH FORSYTH — Despite the large law enforcement presence created by two separate incidents over the weekend, there was no threat of harm to the public, authorities say. According to Epifanio Rodriguez, a spokesman for the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, an incident Sunday that resulted in a visible response involved no fatalities or serious injuries. While the initial call about 4:30 a.m. Sunday mentioned a stabbing, Rodriguez said two men suffered superficial cuts during an argument off Friendship Circle in north Forsyth. The men — one from Dawsonville and the other from Dahlonega — do not live together, nor do they live at the home where the incident occurred, Rodriguez said. One man, who was taken to Northside Hospital-Forsyth, appeared to have a self-inflicted laceration to his abdomen. The other had a cut to his neck. Neither was life threatening. Due to the high-levels of intoxication in both men, their uncooperative nature and conflicting stories, no arrests were made. Rodriguez said neither man wanted to press charges, though an investigation will continue. The other incident involved a missing Gainesville woman who was found dead Saturday morning in a vehicle off Little Mill Road. Rodriguez said the woman had been reported missing and died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. An official cause of death will be determined by an autopsy performed by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. The Georgia State Patrol requested a helicopter search the area northeast of Cumming, initiating a law enforcement presence that began near Pilgrim Mill Road. Forsyth Sheriff’s deputies found the vehicle after working with Gainesville police and the state patrol, Rodriguez said.

SOUTH FORSYTH — Authorities are asking the public’s help in identifying a man who is suspected of flashing cashiers at several area businesses. According to surveillance footage and witness reports, a young black man reportedly entered the CVS at Atlanta Highway (Hwy. 9) and Francis Road around lunchtime Wednesday, exposing his genitals to the cashier before leaving, said Forsyth County Sheriff’s Cpl. Robin Regan. Details about the suspect, including his name and exact age, are not known. He drove off in an older model burgundy passenger vehicle with damage on the passenger side. Regan said Wednesday’s incident was the fifth time the suspect is thought to have exposed himself in a public place, including twice at the same drug store in Forsyth and once each at similar businesses in Roswell, Milton and Alpharetta.“[Today] deputies flooded the area immediately, but he fled the area as the call was coming in,” Regan said. Regan said investigators with the various jurisdictions have met and are working to find the man, who is being sought for charges of indecent exposure. No one else is thought to be connected to the incidents. The man is not suspected of physically harming anyone, Regan said.

GAINESVILLE — A Cumming man was awarded $5.7 million last week in a suit against the federal government after a collision involving a U.S. Postal Service employee caused his leg to be amputated. Jonathan L. Seitz received the award April 27 of about $5.7 million after a November 2012 wreck on Hwy. 198 in Banks County. Riding a motorcycle, Seitz attempted to pass a postal truck that had been delivering mail. “Just as he reached the side of [the postal worker’s] truck, however, [the postal worker] began a left turn into a private driveway and collided with Seitz on the front left side of her truck, resulting in severe injury to Seitz’s right leg and ankle,” according to the order signed by Senior U.S. District Judge William C. O’Kelley. Seitz was flown to Atlanta Medical Center and had his right leg amputated the following month.“My hope from this verdict is that the US Postal Service learns from this so that these types of crashes can be avoided in the future,” Seitz’s attorney Joe Fried said in a statement. “I have seen documents that suggest that this type of crash is all too common for postal employees.”    Fried was assisted by attorneys Brian Mohs and Michael Werner.“We are reviewing the decision and decline further comment,” U.S. Attorney’s Office public affairs officer Bob Page wrote in an email. The case was tried before O’Kelley between Nov. 16-17. O’Kelley wrote in his decision that the postal worker “failed to utilize a tum signal.”“Proper signaling is not only a postal policy but also a statutory requirement,” he wrote. Seitz was in a 13-day coma, fracturing multiple bones in his right leg. At the time of his lawsuit against the federal government, Seitz had incurred more than $1.1 million in medical expenses.“The judge did an exceptional job in carefully considering the evidence,” Fried wrote in a statement. “We felt that Mr. Seitz deserved an even larger verdict, but we are satisfied with what the judge did.”

SOUTH FORSYTH — A Milton man accused of flashing cashiers at several south Forsyth area businesses has been arrested. Trevor Deloache, 23, was charged Friday with two counts of indecent exposure for allegedly showing his genitals to the cashier at the CVS on Atlanta Highway (Hwy. 9) and Francis Road on two separate occasions, the most recent having occurred at midday Wednesday. According to Epifanio Rodriguez, a spokesman for the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, investigators linked evidence at the scene to Deloache and found him at home about 10:30 a.m. Friday. He is being held at the Forsyth County Jail without bond and has holds from Alpharetta and Milton. The sheriff’s office asked for the public’s help Wednesday in identifying the suspect through surveillance footage. Deloache was thought to have exposed himself in a public place five times in the past two weeks, including twice at the same drug store in Forsyth and once each at similar businesses in Alpharetta, Milton and Roswell. It was not immediately known whether those other jurisdictions have taken out warrants. He is not suspected of physically harming anyone.
