As Forsyth County nears the adoption of next year’s budget, the finance committee took another look at the numbers Friday. Not much has changed since the committee reviewed a balanced preliminary budget prior to the commission setting the 2014 millage rate in June, with no increase from 2013. Finance director David Gruen discussed the current general fund budget, now called “proposed” instead of “preliminary,” which is balanced at about $95.8 million. The total balanced revenue and expenditures increased slightly since June, when the figure neared $95 million.“We’ve been updating and making changes as submitted or when department heads say go ahead and take something out,” Gruen said. “We’re continually updating positions.” The committee agreed to allow funding for a new position in the state courts to handle the calendar, after hearing from judges Russell McClelland and Leslie Abernathy-Maddox. The judges also requested an increase in salary to bring the DUI court coordinator in line with the new accountability court positions funded through a state grant. With those final tweaks, the budget still includes about $500,000 in its contingency fund, which is typical. The full commission will review the proposed budget Sept. 24 at a work session and adoption is scheduled for Oct. 17.
