CUMMING — Site preparation for the second of two new parking decks in downtown Cumming is expected to begin next month. The deck, which Forsyth County government referred to as the Mason Street Parking Facility in a news release Friday, will have five levels and 491 spaces. It will be built near the county administration building. The first parking deck, known as the Castleberry Parking Facility, is under construction. It will feature three levels and 222 spaces. Both structures are part of the new courthouse and detention center projects funded by the voter-approved special purpose local option sales tax, or SPLOST VII, program. According to the county, a construction fence will be put in later this month to allow for site preparation to begin. This will result in the loss of a section of public parking and a section of county employee parking spaces. Weekday, daytime public parking spaces are available at several locations near the administration building. They can be viewed on a map at www.forsythco.com. Look for the parking spaces marked with a red dot in designated lots. The Castleberry facility, which is rising at Castleberry Road and Maple Street, is expected to open in May. While the decks are being built, the county is providing designated parking and shuttling for those residents summoned for jury duty. On the day they first report, parking will be available to potential jurors in a designated area of the Cumming Fairgrounds parking lot off of Castleberry Road. From there, they can choose to ride a shuttle or walk to the administration building. The shuttle will be available from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on jury summons days only for travel between the parking area and the administration building. Those summoned for jury duty should allow extra time in the morning and be prepared to show their summons to board the shuttle. General questions about jury service should be directed to the Clerk of Courts’ office at jury@forsythco.com or (770) 781-2120, Ext. 3106.
