Now it’s on to state. Sixteen girls and boys track and field athletes from Forsyth County qualified for the Georgia High School Association Girls and Boys State Track Meets on Saturday, qualifying in the top at their respective sectional meet to reach the zenith of high school competition. Six girls athletes will compete Thursday through Saturday at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany, Ga., while 10 boys will compete next Thursday through Saturday, May 8-10, at Memorial Stadium in Jefferson, Ga. South Forsyth sophomore Savannah Carnahan enters the state meet with perhaps the best shot at an individual title. After setting the top mark in Class AAAAAA in the 3,200-meter run at the Region 6-AAAAAA championships, Carnahan backed that up with a first-place finish at the Class AAAAAA East Sectionals in 11 minutes 25.10 seconds. She also won the 1,600 in 5:08.84, just ahead of West Forsyth’s Haley Anderson (5:08.91). Anderson led a trio of Lady Wolverines who qualified for state. Anderson also qualified in the 800 where she finished second in 2:16.80. She’ll be joined in Albany by Chandler Randall, who finished third in the long jump in 17-3.75, and Liz Galarza, who placed fifth in the 3,200 in 11:32.63. South Forsyth freshman Milicent Bergey gave the county three state qualifiers in the 3,200 with her eighth place finish in 11:43.71. Jessica Johnson was the long girls’ qualifier for North Forsyth, placing eighth in the triple jump in 34-5.5. But the Raiders qualified the most for the boys’ state meet with four individuals, led by senior Tanner Riddle. He finished sixth in the high jump (6-4) and the 110 hurdles (14.88). There was also Chad Warner, who finished third in the pole vault (12-6); Lenny Bishop, who placed sixth in the shot put (50-2.5); and Bennie Bates, who was seventh in the discus (132-7). Lambert pole vaulter Mason Lord could also be an under-the-radar threat to win an individual title. Lord placed first at Sectionals clearing 13-3, just three inches off the top mark in Class AAAAAA. He’ll be joined by teammate Jonathan Schwind who qualified in the 1,600 finishing fourth in 4:27.26. South Forsyth will send two to state in Jake Howlin, who finished seventh in the 800 (1:59.50), and Heinz Achterman, who placed seventh in the pole vault (11-6). Max Warner was the lone athlete from Forsyth Central to qualify for state. Warner will run in the 1,600 and 3,200, which he placed in second and sixth, respectively, at the Class AAAAA East Sectional at Starr’s Mill. Brian Skoglind was the only West boys athlete to qualify for state. Skoglind finished seventh in the 3,200 in 9:49.92.
