Every time the South Forsyth boys made a charge Friday night, North Forsyth had an answer. In the first quarter alone, North went on 6-0 and 11-0 runs. Then, in the third quarter, the Raiders put together two 7-0 runs. After South pulled within five in the fourth quarter, North went on yet another 7-0 run to finish off a 61-58 win at Raider Arena late Friday evening. Chad Bureau led North (11-14 overall, 8-10 Region 6-AAAAAA) with 16 points. Nine of Bureau’s points came in the decisive fourth quarter (7-for-12 from the free throw line). Dakota Holtzclaw added 15 and Nick Cunningham chipped in 12 points on four three-pointers. Evan Cole poured in a game-high 26 for the War Eagles (8-17, 7-11), including 15 in the final period. Thomas McClellan scored 11; South’s two post players managed to score inside despite constant double-teams whenever they caught the ball on the block.“We hung on, man,” North coach Brian Moon said. “I tell ya, I was real proud. Chad Bureau was really good defensively tonight. We’re going good right now.” North raced to a 17-5 lead after one period on the strength of three 3-pointers (two from Cunningham, one from Bureau), but South chipped away. McClellan was efficient inside, and Matt McCorkle’s layup just before the half pulled the War Eagles within nine—not ideal, but manageable. South quickly cut the North advantage to five after the half, but Tyler Koch answered with a transition layup, Bureau scored inside and Holtzclaw knocked down a 3, and North again led by 12. South answered right back—Chason Smith, McClellan and Zach Sewing all scored to get within four. Again, Coleton Holzer spun in a reverse layup, Bureau hit two free throws and Holtzclaw drained a triple to restore a double-digit lead.“We’ve got three guys that can really shoot, and they shot it tonight,” Moon said. “I think we’re getting better, or we’re trying to figure out how to get there. We’ve won four of five, so maybe we’re starting to get hot.” South opens the Region 6-AAAAAA tournament at 5:30 p.m. Monday; the War Eagles face a play-in game against Habersham Central for the right to play Lambert on Wednesday. North plays Centennial at 4 p.m. on Wednesday. All region tournament games are at Chattahoochee High School.
