Looking for a fresh start, North Forsyth has hired Jared Steinberg as its new girls soccer head coach. Steinberg is coming off a two-year stint at South Forsyth where he was an assistant girls soccer coach for one season. Before that, Steinberg helped open Woodland High School in Stockbridge in 2007-08 as its head boys soccer coach and was a junior varsity girls and boys soccer coach at Stockbridge High School from 2004-07. While at Woodland, Steinberg built the Wolfpack into a strong competitor in one of the state’s toughest regions. Woodland went through expected struggles in its first season in 2008, going 1-16, but from there Steinberg led the Wolfpack through a steady rise in respectability to 7-8-1 then 9-7-1 to a then-school record 12-4 in 2011, all while facing regular playoffs teams like Dutchtown and Union Grove from Henry County and state powerhouses like McIntosh, Starr’s Mill and Whitewater from Fayette County. Steinberg hopes he can bring the same expectation of competitiveness to a Lady Raiders program in need of it.“I’d like to change the culture of soccer there,” Steinberg said. “It’s a program that is ready to be a winner. There’s some talent there. With the right direction, I think we can be competitive. Right now, that’s really the goal, just trying to close the gap.” North has been overmatched playing in Region 6-AAAAAA in recent seasons where the girls soccer talent is deeper among south Forsyth and north Fulton schools. The Lady Raiders are 28-51-4 overall over the past five seasons and just 4-38 in region play. North is coming off a season in which it went 6-9 overall and 2-7 in region under Jason Galt, the school’s football coach who stepped in to lead the team after head coach Dana Chapman left on maternity leave. In Steinberg, North hopes it’s found a coach to both stabilize the program and catapult it into contention.“Our whole intention was to find a coach that would be here for years to come,” North athletic director Nathan Turner said. “During the interview process we kept going back to Jared because of his vision for leading the program and trying to make us a contender in what I consider the toughest soccer region in the state. I’m excited about his plan and vision.” Steinberg came to Forsyth County in 2013 looking for his own fresh start. He’d just gotten married, and he and his wife had plans to have a baby, so they moved from Henry County to Forsyth, from a bucolic suburb on the south side of Atlanta to another one on the north. Steinberg got a job teaching economics and history and helping coach girls soccer at South, but they settled in the North district. Steinberg was pulled over to North by his former boss at South, Jeff Cheney, who was named North’s next principal this past February.“If I didn’t like who I was working for, I definitely would not have wanted to make the move,” Steinberg said. “He’s done such good things at South the last several years. I’m excited of the program at North, and I don’t just mean soccer. I mean everything. ... I think are only good things in the future for the school, and I think everybody who is involved is really excited to see what the future holds for the school.”
