FORSYTH COUNTY — Summer kicks off this weekend, but the Forsyth County Board of Education was recently reminded of winter weather and online learning. Feedback from a survey given to teachers, parents and students about itslearning, the district’s solution to missed instructional days due to inclement weather, was presented to board members Thursday at their monthly meeting. Though many in the community had previously voiced opinions about the online learning portal — schools had already been using it, though this was the first year assignments were posted for grades during snow days — nearly 6,000 people contributed to the official survey. That number included 546 students, 981 teachers and 4,113 parents. Responses that were consistent throughout the three groups showed a desire to continue using the platform throughout the year to get used it. Most also indicated they were happy not having to make up school days missed to weather. In the past, that has included extending the year or shortening spring break. Common challenges included a request for teachers to post assignments the morning of the missed school day so students could begin working sooner, as opposed to having a deadline of 5 p.m. the next day. Students and parents also were concerned about the relevance and volume of work, as students do not always turn in work after every period every day. They also requested the district standardize the location assignments posted by teachers. This affected parents with children in different grade levels or schools who said they were unable to get a consistent feel for the site. Students — 507 in middle or high school and 39 in elementary school — and teachers indicated they had practice with the site than parents. Recommendations were taken from this feedback and made to the board, which will work with technology staff to improve and develop the system for next winter.
